A bursary scheme for 5 students from the University of Salford's visual art course will be involved in the project. They will be instigating temporary public art projects which will further animate the route.

Tom is acting as a mentor for the students.

These students are Philipa Isherwood, Alan Wallace, Louise O'Neil, Gareth Chadderton and Julie Butler.

Their ideas are described below. Some of the notes are taken from a project meeting in October, whilst some of the notes refer to an up to date report of their project to date, April 07. As their projects are finalised, they will be presented here.

Philippa
Philippa has done more research into her Peggin Out piece which would involved making washing with primary school children which would link into the Key Stage 1 Victorian curriculum. Kate suggested Lark Hill Place at the museum as a possible venue for installation. Kate to investigate viability of this. Paul suggested the Cube Gallery as another option. Schools themselves would also be an option for display. Philippa is to liaise with Tom about primary schools after proposal approval. Other ideas:

Performance Art and music night at the Kings Arms 24-11-06.

This Event was organised to showcase local talent in the forms of, music, video and performance. The upstairs room at the Kings Arms was used to show a film I made in collaboration with video artist Scott Lockhart in which we walked the Trinity Walking Route and filmed out encounters with people. The sound track for this was provided by live music, much in the way that a piano would accompany a silent movie in the early days of cinema.

During this event I collected sounds with my tape recorders. The recordings are simple conversations that people usually have in pubs and I'm currently splicing all this together with the back-ground noise from the night. I have been down to the Kings Arms randomly to record the voices of people in the kings arms. The Kings Arms is central to my view of the Walking Route as it is a social hub and a building that has managed to cling on to foundations while everything around it has changed.

The next step is to record more people and ask specific questions about Salford. I will put together another event at the end of this process that draws on all the encounters with the people on the walking route and in the Kings Arms. The details of this are still being worked through. It will most likely be an installation within one of the rooms at the Kings Arms that will feature the video and audio recordings made over the time I've worked in the area and I will assemble a listenable volume of conversations/monologs on compact disk.

Louise
Louise has 3 ideas - the idea is to pick one
Julie
Julie and Barry are keen to look at the sculpture in Trinity Park which is not popular with local residents. Idea is to make temporary alterations. Paul suggested Julie could look at proposals to change sculpture a la Betty Beaumont, but not to actually do it. Other options would be to make something with local groups - Julie keen on wrestling club / sports club. Kate to research who is the local sports development worker for the area as a contact. Permission would need to be clarified with Groundwork to see if this would be an option - Barry is looking into this.
