HAM AND EGGS CYCLE STANDS is a series of sculptural cycle stands commissioned for the public realm surrounding a new Aldi food store in Abingdon-on-Thames.
The works were developed as part of the same commission as the OVEN DIAL STOOLS, but adopt a very different visual language and material approach. While the stools reinterpret domestic controls in granite, the cycle stands use stainless steel to transform recognisable food shapes into functional pieces of street furniture. The project was completed as part of the Aldi UK and Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council commission.
Ham and Eggs
The cycle stands take their forms from everyday foods associated with the supermarket environment, including ham, eggs, bread and cheese. Their outlines are simplified and enlarged, allowing familiar objects to become graphic sculptural forms while retaining their practical function as cycle parking.
Made from stainless steel, the works use line and silhouette rather than mass, creating a deliberately lighter and more playful counterpoint to the solid granite Oven Dial Stools.
The project explores how ordinary objects can be shifted in scale, material and context to create something simultaneously familiar, functional and unexpected.
