INTRODUCTION
TRAIN SIGNALS forms part of a wider series of public artworks commissioned for the Iron Works development on the former Mill Road Depot site in Cambridge.
The sculptures reference the nearby railway and the history of the Eagle Foundry, which occupied the site during the nineteenth century. The foundry had a direct rail connection for the movement of materials and manufactured goods, while the railway continues to run alongside the development today.
The artworks reinterpret the visual language of railway signalling through simplified geometric forms and durable materials, creating contemporary markers within the new public realm.
The signals form part of a wider group of site-specific works exploring the industrial, technological and social history of Mill Road.
