Animated GIF Workshop

The workshop explored Tom’s wider interest in the visual language of everyday switches, controls and domestic objects.

Students created simple animations based on switches being turned on and off, using repetition and movement to transform familiar objects into short looping sequences.

The activity provided a way of exploring some of the ideas behind the wider public art commission through a different medium, connecting the functional language of controls and interfaces with animation and digital image-making.

The resulting animated GIFs were developed for display within the entrance lobby of the supermarket, extending the public art project from the permanent external artworks into the building itself.

The workshop gave students an opportunity to contribute their own visual responses to the commission while introducing approaches to animation, sequencing and the transformation of everyday objects.
