The narratives found in these artworks are a common thread found in Tom’s work and stem from an explorative and humorous approach to subject matters such as cinema, pop art science fiction and low-tech special effects. From electrical engineering to the switch that turns on our kettle a switch or a lever is a ubiquitous yet often overlooked everyday item that conveys much about the people who used the items and the period in which it was created.
For this project Tom has played with rudimentary analogue devices and attached bespoke audio to create electronic personalities for a series of digital artworks and hopefully in so doing investigate an anthropomorphic connection toward technology.
These artworks formed the starting point for a short experimental film titled ‘195’ and was projected using a digital projector and screen in the basement of 195 Mare Street as part of the Open House Festival on the 16-17th September 2023.
